A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
